Cycle from Valencia along the sea to the rice fields, Albufera Natural Park and the orange groves around the Jucar River (Ribera de Xúquer). Fully organized incl. English roadbook, GPS, bicycle rental and accommodation. An easy route with hardly any differences in altitude, mainly following cycle paths and quiet agricultural roads.

There are many places on the route to stop for a snack or drink. And some fantastic places to eat paella or learn how to make one by yourself! Another well-known regional dish is 'all i pebre', a spicy dish with eel, potato and pepper.

Thanks to the mild climate along the Mediterranean Sea, you can enjoy cycling almost every day, with 300 days of sunshine a year. Winter never gets really cold, in summer you'll find nice beaches or natural swimming pools along the Jucar river to take a cool break..

I personally enjoy winter to cycle in this area, because the orange and kaki groves are packed with colourful fruit. And thousands of migratory birds flock down on the inundated fields.

In March you can enjoy the white flowers and sweet perfume of the 'azahar' (orange blossom).

The rice fields are flooded a few times a year.  From May onwards the rice plants will appear and turn the water into a bright green sea. In autumn the migratory birds return, the water as well.

Albufera_Estany de Pujol_C0085.00_11_20_

Albufera is a huge lake, just a few kilometres south of Valencia. For centuries, rice has been cultivated around this lake.

The fields are flooded several times a year via a widely branched irrigation system.

You cycle right through the rice fields, over dykes and agricultural roads.

Then you cycle through the basin of the Júcar river, across orange and kaki orchards.

You can add some nice extras, such as a boat trip on the Albufera lake, a birding excursion with an expert guide, paella cooking workshop or canoe trip on the Jucar river or the mountain lake of Tous.

The route is easy, as almost the entire area is at sea level. For sportier cyclists, there are a number of alternative stages, with more ascends and beautiful views as a reward.

If you opt for an e-bike, you can easily reach the most beautiful places.

You spend the night in attractive hotels along the route. You can also extend your stay at the beach of Cullera, a relatively quiet resort with beautiful sandy beaches.

All our trips start and end in Valencia. Your trip to Spain is not included. There are several options:

1. Sustainable by train; via Paris and Barcelona to Valencia. Especially the last stretch is very beautiful because you then drive directly along the Mediterranean Sea!

2. Affordable & comfortable by bus. In Barcelona, take the train to Valencia. Check www.flixbus.com

3. By car. Paris-Valencia is approx. 1300 km.

4. Fast by plane; There are many direct flights from the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Paris. Flight time is approx. 2 hours.

This route is available as a 2 to 5 day holidays, including overnight stays on the route and the option to stay extra days on the beach in Cullera.

Start and endpoint is Valencia.

Day 1 and 5 are a regular part of the program. You can add or skip days 2, 3 and 5.

Day 1: 50km

From Valencia, you cycle through the dunes to El Saler and the Albufera lake, where you can take a boat trip through the reedlands (to be arranged on-site, approx. 4 € pp). Or cycle to the visitor centre of the National Park, where special birds often land on a small lagoon.

You can observe them from one of the hides.

Or go on a 'safari' with our birding expert. (optional, at extra cost). She knows exactly where you can spot special birds or orchids. With a bit of luck you will also come across Flamenco's.

The village of El Palmar is a nice place to taste an authentic paella. It is located on the edge of the rice fields, which extend south from that point.

You spend the night in hotel La alqueria de Vilches, not far from the beach.

Day 2: 40-60 km

“Today you follow the Jucar. The water of this river has been used for centuries to irrigate rice fields and citrus plantations. Today you could aslo do the authentic Valencian paella cooking workshop.

You cycle on the dykes or asphalted agricultural roads near the river, surrounded by orchards. This is especially beautiful in winter when it is full of oranges and persimmons.

You can also follow a cooking workshop along the way, where you learn how to make an authentic Valencian paella.

Today you can choose from a flat route, or make an extra loop (with a short climb) to the nature reserve around Castle La Murta.

You spend the night in the cosy *hotel El Raco de la Pintora. Here you can enjoy the view of the mountains at the edge of the pool.

Day 3: 40-50 km

This day you can choose an easy route (almost flat) or a more difficult stage with a climb to the reservoir of Tous (*). Around this clear blue lake you can enjoy fantastic views over the mountains and the coastal plain to the Mediterranean Sea.

In both route variants you cycle along the river bank to the Antella weir and through the orchards to picturesque Sumacarcer. Here the river is shallow and you can really see how clear the water is. On a hot day you can paddle or canoe here. If you choose the easy route, you can also cycle a little bit uphill here (*), so that you get a nice view over the valley of the Jucar river and the extensive citrus orchards.

On request you can make a kayak or SUP trip on the reservoir (+35€ pp), accompanied by an instructor. You will then sail to a 16th century watchtower, with an unforgettable view.

You will spend the night again in *Hotel El Raco de la Pintora in Alberic,

(*) Prefer to enjoy without too much effort? Consider hirng an e-bike.

If you opt for the 3-day variant, the tour ends today in Alberic and you board the train to Valencia. Or our driver will pick you up there and take you to Valencia.

Day 4: 40 km

This day you cycle along the river back to the coast (the easiest and shortest way).

Or you take the route via the town of Carcaixent. At first it goes uphill for a while, but soon the gradual descent begins.

You follow the route of 'el trenet', an old railway line.

This route goes through a beautiful valley, past stately villas and citrus plantations. You can visit one of those plantations and learn more about the history and cultivation of oranges. You can also visit the enormous monastery of Simat de la Valldigna. Then you continue along citrus plantations to the coast.

You spend the night in the seaside resort of Cullera in *** hotel El Chalet or **** Cullera Holiday.

In the summer it is pleasantly busy on the boulevard. In low season it is wonderfully quiet and you have the enormous sandy beach almost to yourself.

You can extend your stay at the beach with one or more nights here.

Day 5. 45 km

The last stage first leads along the coast, via the lighthouse of Cullera. Then it goes through the rice fields towards the Albufera lake and the dunes of El Saler. You can take a break at one of the beaches or enjoy dinner at a beachside restaurant along the way. Once in Valencia, the package ends. We are also happy to arrange accommodation for you in the city.

We recommend **** Hotel Eurostars Acteon or **** Silken Puerta Valencia for its location, no too far from the beach and the city center. Besides, you safely park your bike here at night. In that case, we can extend your bike rental for the rest of your stay.

You can easily combine this route with one of our other routes, for example, the tour on the Via Verde railway track .
