Drive through colorful red sandstone mountains, through cork oak valleys. Discover picturesque white villages and 'hidden treasures' such as waterfalls, aqueducts and Moorish castles.

Cycle right through the Sierra de Espadán, a protected nature reserve about 50 km from Valencia. The weather is excellent here all year round, even in winter, because it is relatively close to the Mediterranean Sea.

This area is ideal for sporty cyclists who enjoy occasional uphill cycling. And after every col comes a nice descent anyway!

For your convenience we also rent E-bikes, saving your energy to enjoy all the way!

The Sierra de Espadán has well-maintained and low-traffic asphalt roads, ideal for cycling.

Looking for winter sun? February is a wonderful month because the almond trees bloom. And at the end of March the oranges bloom and 'the landscape is perfumed' by the sweet scent of the 'Azahar'.

In the summer you can also swim at fantastically located (public) swimming pools or at paradise swimming spots in rivers and waterfalls! As an extra, we can also organize a kayak or paddle surf trip (paddle boarding).
Or climb under the guidance of an instructor along a Via Ferrata, a secure climbing course where you are secured by a steel cable.

This tour is self-guided. Just follow our detailled roadbook or optional GPS.

Before departure, we personally explain the routes and tell you about the places of interest.

The routes are suitable for anyone with cycling experience in the hills or mountains. Part of the tour goes downhill, and then it is important that you can brake gently when cornering and keep your balance well.

You can start the bike tour in different places, depending on the distance and the number of altimeters per day.

Below you will find the most common program, but you can also shorten it, for example by skipping the first and last stage.

The routes are all on asphalt roads, to ensure safe cycling all year round and avoid muddy or slippery tracks. However, if that's what you're looking for... you could follow a number of extra loops via special MTB routes. Daily distances may also increase. There is a network of hundreds of kilometres of mountain bike trails throughout the Sierra de Espadan.

DAY 1 (Friday) 60 km.

From Valencia, you cycle through the horticultural area 'Horta Nord' towards Sagunto. This is where the mountains begin, which immediately rise steeply on the horizon. The road, however, goes uphill very gradually, because you follow the river valley of the river Palancia. Via small roads through a number of nice villages and a part of the railway track 'Via Verde' you cycle to Segorbe for the first night, on the edge of the Sierra de Espadán.

You can skip this first stage by taking the train from Valencia to Segorbe.

You spend the night in hotel Martin el Humano.

DAY 2. (Saturday) 38 km (+ 10km),

Via the village of Navajas you cycle along the reservoir from Regajo uphill to Alcudia de Veo. Along the way you cycle past a number of Moorish castles and typical villages. You cycle along steep rock walls of red / purple sandstone and you will also encounter the first cork oak trees, typical for this area. You can extend the route (on the spot) this day with a visit to the 'ghost village' of Jinquer. This has been deserted since the Spanish Civil War, with a medieval church as a silent witness.

You will stay in **** Hotel Ben i Ali in Aín, a picturesque 17th century village.

Day 3 (Sunday) 30km (+10 km)

From Aín you initially cycle downhill to Artana. There you drive through orchards with ancient olive trees to the Penyas Altas, an impressive rock formation of red sandstone. You then climb via Onda (with the 'castle with 300 towers') to Sueras, where you spend the night in * hotel Verdia. On this day you can extend the route by cycling to the Fuente de Castro, a source at the foot of a Moorish castle ruin.

Day 4 (Monday) 40-50 km

Today a beautiful trip on roads full of hairpin bends to Fuentes de Ayodar.

Outside the village is the 'Pozo Negro', a beautiful lagoon with waterfalls. You then cross via a pass to the valley of the river Mijares. and goes to Fanzara, an open-air museum with more than 100 houses-high graffiti.

Overnight at Hotel Rural Castellet in Fanzara or ** Hotel Gran Toledo in Onda

Day 5 (Tuesday) 55-65 km

You cycle around the azure reservoir of Ribesalbes.

Afterwards you can either go to Vilafames (one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, with an extra night), or cycle through the orange and almond groves to **** eco hotel Mar de Fulles. A special hotel with a sustainable philosophy and a fantastic slow-food restaurant. From the restaurant and the hammocks in the flower garden you have a panoramic view over the Sierra de Espadán.

Day 6 (Wednesday)

Many people extend their stay in the eco hotel to enjoy the view for an extra day and to go hiking or cycling in the immediate vicinity. For example, on this day you could go to the caves of St Joseph's Caves, where you can take a boat trip on the longest navigable subterranean river in Europe.

Day 7 (Thursday) 60 km.

From Ecohotel Mar de Fulles you cycle back through the orange groves and the horticultural area 'Horta Nord' to Valencia. It is an easy stage, with relatively few altimeters.

The last part of this day you cycle along the coast and you enter the city via the boulevard.

Along the way there are plenty of bars and restaurants to taste paella or 'horchata', a typical drink from the region.

You will receive a map and English roadbook with brief descriptions of the sights along the way.

On request we provide GPS tracks.

At some points you can deviate from the route to visit, for example, a waterfall or castle. A number of sights can be reached by bicycle (via smaller roads), others only on foot.

The route runs as much as possible on local roads, with hardly any car traffic. Here and there you will find a bicycle path. The road (asphalt) is in good condition and sometimes goes uphill, sometimes downhill. Sometimes you mainly need pedals, sometimes only your brakes :)

Our hybrid bikes have 21 or 24 gears, the E-bikes 7 gears (and 5 levels for pedal assistance). For children, we use 21-speed mountain bikes. We also have a 'Follow me tandem' or child seats for the little ones.

We make a tailor-made offer for this tour. Not all accommodations are open all year round, so we need to request availability from the hotels based on your preferred departure date. It may therefore be necessary to change the order of the stages.

In principle, departure is possible all year round, based on availability of accommodations. These are sometimes only open on weekends.

If bad weather is forecast in the mountains, it may be necessary to adjust the route. The chance of this is small, however. In the summer it is 28 to 35 degrees in this area during the day. In spring and autumn between 20 and 30 degrees. And in winter 15 to 20.

In the summer months, the public swimming pools are open, often located in beautiful places in the mountains. And there are a number of paradise natural swimming spots.

After completing the booking form, we check the availability of accommodations, our driver and the bikes and confirm the booking asap. Also fill in an alternative date in case we have to change to another date due to the weather.

Please also state your height, so that we can prepare the correct size bicycle. And if children are going to be there, please state how much and how old they are so we can provide child seats.

Your safety on the road has our attention, but remains your own responsibility. We provide helmets, panniers and vests in a striking color. Participants in our tours are expected to take out travel and accident insurance themselves.
